I’ll be honest – I never thought I’d get excited about a van. But here we are.
I’ve been following what GMC’s doing with their vans lately, and the Sierra name is starting to show up in conversations about full-size vans that actually make sense for people like me. When you’re dealing with mobility challenges, vehicle shopping becomes this whole different beast. You’re not just thinking about cupholders and gas mileage – you’re thinking about whether you can actually get in and out without it being a production.
That’s what caught my attention about where GMC seems to be heading. The Sierra van concept (or whatever they end up calling it) looks like it’s being built with actual space in mind. Not just “technically there’s room” space, but real, usable space. The kind where a wheelchair or mobility device isn’t an afterthought crammed into a corner.
The height is a big deal too. I’m tired of vehicles where you either have to climb up like you’re scaling a mountain or scrunch down like you’re getting into a go-kart. Something with a reasonable step-in height and enough headroom to actually move around? That’s not asking for much, but it’s surprisingly rare.
And look, I know I’m getting ahead of myself here. I don’t have one sitting in my driveway. But the fact that a major manufacturer is even thinking about making vans that work for regular people – people with families, people with mobility needs, people who just need stuff to work – that gives me hope.
Maybe one day I’ll actually be writing about my own Sierra van instead of just dreaming about it. A person can hope, right?
